- A tooth feels loose.
- The doctor found periodontitis during your exam.
How it works
- 1An evaluation of your gums. To know how advanced the disease is and how many visits it will take.
- 2Local anesthesia. To work below the gum without you feeling it.
- 3Scaling. Removes the tartar and bacteria below the gum line.
- 4Root planing. Smooths the tooth root so the gum can heal.
Afterwards
- Wait until the anesthesia wears off before eating.
- Your gums may feel sensitive for a few days.
- Checkups and cleanings afterwards help keep periodontitis from coming back.
Questions
Is it the same as a regular cleaning?
No. A regular cleaning removes tartar down to the gum line; a deep cleaning goes below it, where periodontitis bacteria build up.
Does it hurt?
It's done under local anesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during the treatment. You may feel some discomfort for a few days afterwards.
